Last week I was on vacation, so it had been a while since I used the bathroom at work. When I left the women's bathroom this week I was--floored, to say the least.
About a month ago I heard this crazy driver lady saying that UPS needed to make its employees feel more at home because so many of them are there more than they are at home. (That's the truth too, several drivers pull 12 hour days, and those are good days.) Not long after there were a few signs in the women's restroom that said, "Treat this bathroom like it's your home, some of us are here more than we're home."
For me I didn't mind the signs. I agreed with them. However, a couple weeks after that I walked in and saw three art prints on the walls in what could be called a sitting area. That took me a minute to digest. I'm so use to seeing white brick walls and cold uninviting benches that the art prints were a little alien. Two of the prints are landscapes and one is a woman, appropriately enough. At least it's not a pin up of some ripped half naked man--thank God.
But here's the moment that I thought it was a little too much:
First off, it should be safe to assume that anything that elicits the words "What the f*&K happened in here?" is a strange sight. I walked in unaware of what was about to assault my vision. I stopped right as the door slammed close. I slowly looked around and whispered, "What the f*&K happened in here?" I didn't think I was loud enough to be heard by the driver who was just finishing washing her hands, but she said back to me, "Yeah, I think they took it a little too far."
"I'll say" I replied.
Just to give you a small idea of what it looked like, imagine your three year old niece/daughter/friend's kid (whoever), came into your bathroom with her Lisa Frank stickers and placed them bitches everywhere she could reach. Then imagine that your grandmother or great aunt or some old lady, (or my dad), came in with a old plastic vase and some plastic roses and carefully placed them on the rack above the benches. Or for the 70's generation, imagine your kitchen wallpaper and then imagine what it would like like if you were to take acid and that's close to what this bathroom now looks like. It was...a sight. I took a couple pictures to share with you. Enjoy.
