Let me start by saying this, if you have anyone in your life who likes to see women naked don't ask them to go to a tapas bar. Having almost certainly misheard you they will immediately say "yes." Upon arrival, they will be highly disappointed to find small portions of food comparable to appetizers and not partially nude women. It never fails. It happened to Regina and I the first time we had heard of tapas. Last time we were talking about tapas to a straight guy his eyes immediately lit up and then faded to gloomy disappointment, so that's my disclaimer to you. For those who are still confused about what tapas are let me give a brief history/definition. Tapas are a traditional Spanish cuisine that are usually eaten after the time we call a "siesta" and before dinner. They are basically small versions of entrées. So to North Americans we may compare them to appetizers. However similar the two may sound, the two traditions are different. In Spain, tapas are eaten with groups of friends at several different tapas restaurants and is called a "tapas crawl." We do something like that in the states with drinking and call it a bar/pub hop.
In Atlanta, tapas are a big hit however foreign they may still be to some people. We have high class tapas bars and cheaper tapas bars. My opinion of Atlanta tapas is that they are far too expensive to even consider doing a "tapas crawl," with cheapest tapas starting out at $5. In fact, it would probably be cheaper to just do a bar/pub hop instead. Despite the high prices for Atlanta tapas there are a couple of reasons I encourage people to try them. One is that it gives you the opportunity to try a whole new cuisine without spending $24 dollars on an entrée. Two is that there is still hope for your wallet if you go when these tapas bars are having specials. Two good bars I suggest are Fuego and Twist. Fuego has a 2 1/2 hour period, 4pm-6:30pm, on weeknights where you can get select tapas for $1 and they have the arguably "best mojito" in Atlanta. On Wednesday nights, the mojitos are $3 a piece. Twist is where Regina and I frequent most often for tapas. Every Sunday night after 4pm you can get all you can eat select tapas for $10. The list always contains a salad and sushi. The other four selections change weekly. I highly suggest this special as Twist for first time tapas eaters. See you Sunday.
